After more than seven years of promoting, implementing, flogging, and questioning the open data agenda, I’ve found a few things that work and several that do not. Using the outcomes of a citizen engagement project in Indonesia as a starting point, this talk looks critically at the incentives, processes, and resources required for effective data sharing in 2017 and beyond. I will examine the trends to watch, challenges to be solved, and the rhetoric to avoid for building true data partnerships.
